Gradually I am using my smartphone more, including text messages (yes, I'm learning). A few weeks ago I got a message from my doctor's surgery about records showing me at risk of heart disease and offering me a health coach. On confirming it was not a scam, I took them up on the offer.

Like much else, health advice changes all the time. Now carbohydrate is the enemy (at least for some; I have to ignore a newspaper piece extolling rye bread and the like because my own experiment with rye bread was a disaster). Fats are more acceptable than hitherto. So, the humble potato slips futher into the shadows.

Accidentally, my health coach gave me one more reason why most academics are to be found on the political left. She is not the first person I have come across rejecting the old story that (early morning) breakfast is the most important meal of the day, a story my parents learned from their doctors. But the coach explained that story in terms of the cereal companies funding much of the dietary research. (I well remember the adverts for Weetabix and Kellogg's cornflakes.) No surprise that such revelations impel academics (including scientists) against markets and capitalism. Any chance of Tories, Republicans, et al taking notice?
